The Right Golf Outfit

Do you have a golf lesson next week and wonder if you can wear a t-shirt and jogging pants? Absolutely not! Most golf clubs have dress codes and do not allow anyone on the course who does not adhere to them. Fortunately, these rules are similar in many clubs, allowing you to align your wardrobe accordingly and maintain your style while following the rules. The dress codes differ for men and women – no surprise, right? In this blog, we dive into the do's and don'ts of clothing on the golf course and what you should have in your wardrobe.

Men on the Course

First and foremost: the shirt! You must wear a collared shirt on the golf course. This can be a polo or a dress shirt, with long or short sleeves, but without a collar is not allowed! The shirt must always be tucked in, which is why golf shirts are a bit longer. The material of the shirt depends on the weather; cotton is ideal for warm weather, but in winter, synthetic materials are preferred.

You should also have a set of easily removable outerwear for cold and rainy conditions. Many golfers wear vests, sweaters, windbreakers, etc. for a neat, layered look. Make sure your outfit has a theme; random colors can make you look out of place.

For pants, both shorts and long pants are acceptable, as long as they are of appropriate material and length. Shorts should be Bermuda length, and long pants should not touch the ground as this could cause tripping hazards. Comfort is very important, because although there are no rules about it, it certainly affects your game. Make sure your pants or shorts are neither too tight nor too loose.

General Rules

There are some rules that apply to both men and women, such as shoes. There are three types of shoes used on the golf course: metal spikes, soft spikes, and spikeless shoes. Metal spikes are banned in almost all clubs because they can damage the turf. Don’t be fooled by anyone trying to convince you to buy them. Soft spikes are the most popular, but you can also use spikeless shoes if you suffer from pressure points. Make sure your shoes are specifically made for golf, as they provide the extra grip you need.

Then we come to accessories. The most important categories are gloves, headwear, and belts. Gloves are usually worn on your non-dominant hand for better grip. It’s better not to get creative with gloves, as they are mainly for comfort and not fashion. You can be creative with other accessories, such as a visor, cap, or hat. Use a belt! It can be any style, as long as it is not the belt you wear to work.

Women on the Course

The rules for women regarding shirts are almost the same as for men, with a few relaxations. Women are allowed in most golf clubs to wear a shirt without a collar, as long as it has sleeves. Some clubs also allow women to leave their shirts untucked, but it is better to wear it tucked in for a neater look and so the shirt does not get in the way during your swing.

For the bottom, women have three options: shorts, skirts/skorts, and pants. Previously, women had to wear Bermuda length shorts, but now shorter lengths are allowed, although they should not be shorter than where your fingertips reach.

Golf dresses are also very popular among female golfers. Dresses are usually cut just above the knee and often have built-in shorts, making playing much more convenient. It is advisable, when choosing dresses, to stick to specific golf brands, as there are many collared dresses that are not really designed for golfers.
